What is a Prop Firm? Challenges, funded accounts and rules
Understand prop firms through evaluation/challenge structure, funded accounts, drawdown and payout rules before paying for a program.

A Prop Firm program gives a trader access to an evaluation or funded route under rules defined by the provider. It is not simply “buying a large trading account.” The practical value of a program depends on its rules, usable risk buffer and payout conditions, not only the 50K or 100K number in the headline.
Many modern programs use simulated trading environments. Always read the Terms and FAQ for the exact provider and program so you understand what the fee buys, what the account represents and how rewards are determined.
What is a challenge or evaluation?
A challenge requires the trader to reach one or more objectives without breaching risk limits. A program can have:
- one phase;
- two phases;
- three phases;
- or an instant/direct-funded route without a traditional evaluation.
CTI currently publishes an 8% target, 5% trailing drawdown, no daily drawdown and three profitable days for its 1-Step program. Its 2-Step uses a 10% Phase 1 target, 5% Phase 2 target, 10% static maximum drawdown and 5% daily drawdown. Two programs from the same provider can therefore require very different risk management.
What is a funded account?
After meeting program conditions, the trader moves into the provider’s funded stage. “Funded” does not mean the trader can freely withdraw the full displayed account balance. Traders normally become eligible for a profit share or reward under payout rules.
Check:
- starting profit share;
- when the first payout becomes available;
- minimum payout/profit thresholds where applicable;
- consistency rules;
- whether funded-stage rules differ from evaluation rules.
The rules that matter most
Profit target
The return required for a phase. A higher target is not automatically harder if the risk limits are also wider, so target and drawdown should be read together.
Daily drawdown
The maximum loss permitted within a day. You need to know the reset time and whether the calculation uses balance or equity.
Maximum drawdown
The overall loss limit. It may be static or trailing.
Trailing drawdown
A risk floor that can rise as the account reaches new high-water marks. Traders often misunderstand this because the usable buffer can change as the account grows.
Profitable days / consistency
Some programs require a number of profitable days or limit how much of a payout can come from the best day. Never assume these rules are identical across prop firms.
News / weekend / EA rules
An EA-based strategy, news trader or weekend holder may fit one program and breach another.
The5ers shows why the exact program matters
The5ers currently offers multiple program families such as High Stakes and Bootcamp. Its current High Stakes page describes a two-step structure with unlimited time, minimum profitable-day requirements and program-specific daily/maximum loss limits. Rules can be updated by version and program, so Yoshi does not collapse all The5ers programs into one generic drawdown number.
CTI also needs program-level reading
CTI’s 1-Step and 2-Step use different drawdown structures, while Instant Funding is another route without a traditional evaluation. The useful question is therefore not “what are CTI’s rules?” but:
“Which program am I looking at, which version, and when was it verified?”
Seven questions before buying a challenge
- What is the program fee and when, if ever, is it refundable?
- What is the profit target for each phase?
- How is daily drawdown calculated?
- Is maximum drawdown static or trailing?
- Do news, weekend and EA rules fit how I trade?
- After funding, when can payout start and what is the profit share?
- Are there consistency, minimum-day or minimum-PnL requirements?
Broker or Prop Firm first?
If you are still building a process, position sizing is inconsistent or drawdown control is not yet stable, a smaller self-funded broker account is usually structurally easier to understand. Prop firms become more relevant when you can trade inside rule-based constraints and accept that a rule breach can end account eligibility.
